About
“There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal… it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit - immortal horrors or everlasting splendours.” - C.S. Lewis
The world is full of mystery. And beauty. Hidden in cracks. Spilling from dark, dusty corners. Sometimes ablaze in all its glory. I am looking for it. I am trying to seek the poetry of life. I find Truth in beauty and meaning in creation. And so, through words, aloud and on paper, I seek to reveal the joy of the Maker by being and creating this beauty for others to see.
I am a lifelong Canadian. A paper-loving Vancouverite. A polaroid junkie. A letter-writer. A typewriter owner. A wife and mother. And a java-sipping adventurer.
We recently traded the seaside views of Bowen Island, BC for the banks of Toronto’s Humber River, where I live with my husband Michael, daughter, Madeleine Jacoba Hope (September 2009,) and son, Thomas Patrick Hart (August 2011.) We attend Grace Toronto Church.
My work has appeared in MUSE, Comment and Vancouver magazine, and is forthcoming in UPPERCASE, Geez and the Literary Review of Canada. I am the founder of SeekingEve.ca (based on a book I’ve written, currently seeking a publisher,) owner of The Word Studio and contribute to SheLoves, Art-BC.com, Sweetmama and the Cardus After Hours blog.
With a background in the arts, broadcasting and political activism it’s my long-term hope to pursue graduate studies in the area of communication and culture, examining the intersection between media and politics and how new media shapes our understanding of citizenship. I am a graduate of the SFU School of Communication and the Women’s Campaign School, and teach at Langara College’s self-employment program.
You’ll notice I write poetry. It’s sort of an unusual thing but I lay prose on the page to understand the past and cast hope into the future. Sometimes poems come in a flourish but most of the time I write line by line, as my vocation as mother allows. Words scrawled on napkins. Post-its. Scraps of paper. At the end of the day I paste them into my journal and, bit by bit, poems find their way into the world and then out into this blog for you to share.
I’d love to hear from you: christina[.]m[.]crook@gmail.com.
